Dear Edcampers!
The organizing team of Edcamp MSLA has been working fast and furious in the last few days to put together the finishing touches for this Saturday’s event. Here are a few essential questions that you may be wondering about and we all know that school librarians love questions about as much as they love books (almost).
When is Edcamp MSLA?
It is this Saturday, September 26 at the Dedham Middle School, 70 Whiting Avenue, Dedham, MA, 02026. There is plenty of free parking. You may park in the driveway in front of the school. Additional parking can be found from Mt. Vernon Street. (With the school on your left, pass by Dedham Middle School and take your first left on Mt. Vernon Street and your first left into the driveway). Enter through the main doors (on Whiting Ave) and we will direct you. Registration begins at 8:00. Session building will be at 9:00 and the first session begins at 9:30.
Here is the schedule for the day.
What should I bring?
Will there be food?
Because of our amazing sponsors, there will be coffee and tea in the morning and a casual lunch with pizza, salad, chips, beverages including bottled water, and sweets. Unfortunately, we are not able to provide for dietary restrictions so please feel free to pack a lunch and bring it with you.
What sessions will there be?
We don’t know yet! Edcamp is completely based around the interests, passions, and questions that we all bring with us the morning of the event! During the first hour or so we’ll collaboratively build the schedule to fit our needs. We'll build the afternoon sessions after lunch. If you want to facilitate a session, you just go up to the board, slap a sticky note with a catchy title on it, and then get out of the way so other people can add theirs. It sounds crazy if you’ve never been to an Edcamp before, but we swear that it works every single time.
What should my session look like?
A good Edcamp session should involve the people in the room as much as possible. We’re all called participants for a reason! Don’t stand in front of the room and lecture at people or read from a presentation. Have a real conversation. Invite questions and responses from everybody in the room. Do something hands-on. The job of the facilitator is to ask the first question and move the conversation along. No pressure.
How can I share what I’m learning?
#edcampmsla for Twitter, Facebook, and any other social media that uses hashtags. But wait! We are not the only Edcamp happening on Saturday. Use the hashtag #edcampsept26 and connect with Edcamp WL (NJ), Edcamp Arkansas, Edcamp Baltimore, Edcamp Merrimack Valley (MA), Edcamp Montreal, Edcamp Chicago, and Edcamp CTE (OK). So that's kinda fun.
What else?
If you ordered a t-shirt, you will be able to pick it up at the registration desk. Please bring $15 (cash or a check) if you ordered a t-shirt but did not pay for it when you registered. There’s a small chance that we may have a few extras on hand so if you’re interested, bring $15 to nab one. No guarantees that extras will be available for purchase, however.
If you will not be able to join us after all, please contact us to let us know and we promise to miss you terribly. Or contact us if you have any questions.
We’re really looking forward to seeing you on Saturday because school librarians love collaborating as much as we love books! Almost.
